I don’t remember exactly where I first heard about American Crew’s hair care products, with my most vivid memory being a video review from Alpha M. consulting, but after well over a year of use I’m so glad I stumbled into it. During this time with American Crew products I’ve had a chance to experiment with a few of their products. This review highlights what I have come to find is my favorite all around hair styling product, the Forming Cream.
American Crew Forming Cream comes in fairly classic, minimal packaging. It looks quality and is distinct without being encased in neon plastic as some other offerings on the market. The Forming Cream is labeled as providing medium hold with medium shine and in all of my use I find this is an adequate opening statement. Truth be told if you apply enough of the cream to wet hair you can achieve a shinier finish with a harder hold and if you apply less product to drier hair you will achieve more of a matte finish. Either way, out of all the American Crew hair styling products I’ve tried this seems to be the most versatile whether I’m going for a tight comb over with some shine or just trying to add weight and body to my hair for more of a worn-in look.
At this point I should really mention that the smell of the Forming Cream is absolutely fantastic. The smell is really a high point and I find that when I use other hair products for a while and come back to the American Crew I am always surprised by how beautiful and rich the smell is. The mens grooming industry is full of nice smells, but it’s not often that something smells this nice and also smell this refined. The fragrance notes aren’t artificial like lesser grooming products. Not only will your hair smell good upon application but I have also caught the scent lingering while going about my work, which is honestly more than I could have asked for.
The consistency of the cream is extremely smooth and has just the right amount of viscosity to easily work evenly onto your hands and then into your hair either while it’s wet or somewhat dry. With the product being as smooth as it is, I find that it doesn’t really clump and is also great for spot touch-ups as well. If I could only use one styling product for the rest of my life this would be it. The only thing that may keep you from doing it is one of the only concerns with the purchasing American Crew products; Price.
This Forming Cream is fairly expensive when compared to other offerings in the market at your typical chain stores. Prices for the cream have traditionally been in the $15 – $20 range, but its consistent, outstanding quality and prevalence at most chain stores makes it worth the price. Also, if you’re a frequent traveler, you’ll appreciate that the default size is 3 Oz, perfect for throwing in a weekend Dop kit or your airport carry-on.
If you’re looking to dip into the American Crew line of products, the Forming Cream is a fantastic place to start and you may find it fast becomes your go-to styling cream. With wide availability and quality and consistency of product I can whole-heartedly recommend this product to any young professional looking to add more polish and confidence to their appearance. If the look and smell of your hair with American Crew Forming Cream doesn’t leave you feeling more elevated, refined, and confident then I’m not sure that any other products will.
